Robert Dyas

A well-known retailer of houseware, garden essentials, consumer electronics and DIY products, Robert Dyas is a popular high street name across the South of England - that prides itself in customer service excellence, a rich retail history and a comprehensive product range.

History

An immigrant from County Meath in Ireland, Robert Dyas paved his way to the retail industry in 1872 – when he opened his own retail store using a £5 inheritance. He sold items made from iron, which were appropriate for domestic use.

Robert’s dedication to his business assured that he continued to deliver only the finest products and that his customers could rely on the best advice and services – which remains part of the company ethos to this day.

In the 19th century, the store started expanding across London and the South East, with a total of 18 stores that were established before Robert passed away. By the time he died, his family was left with a thriving and successful retail chain.

Just like any other business, Robert Dyas faced major problems before it reached the dizzy heights of success that it enjoys today. World War I and the Wall Street Crash greatly affected the company’s operations – leading to the loss of 18 stores, their head office and the Robert Dyas warehouse in The Blitz. In 1997, the company also fell victim to a fire which affected the company’s distribution centre.

Despite these setbacks the company continued, with the business under different owners. In 2009, it was owned by Lloyds Banking Group (with a 40% stake) and fellow majority owner, Allied Irish Bank after a £30m debt-for-equity swap.

Theo Paphitis Retail Group

Theo Paphitis is an entrepreneur and former Dragon’s Den investor who owns a number of retail businesses, including the lingerie chain, Boux Avenue and stationery items store, Ryman Stationery.

In 2012, the entrepreneur bought Robert Dyas in a deal worth £10m. The company has grown to become a highly successful modern retailer, with a reputation for quality and affordable kitchenware, houseware and DIY products, among others.
