Aisle Widths In Convenience Stores

A question that arises quite regularly is what are the optimum aisle widths in a convenience store and how much space to allow at the end of shelving gondolas.  Below we have listed the key dimensions following the industry best-practice, this what the symbol groups would expect to see:

  • Gondola aisles should be 1200mm wide minimum.
  • Allow 1200mm between gondola end and equipment at the back of the store.
  • More space is required in front of the counter - 1500mm is the minimum recommended here.

Larger stores with higher footfall and occupancy will benefit from wider aisles.  Occasional short-length pinch-points can be tolerated but aisle must not go below 1000mm wide at any point.
